10 Most Common Mistakes Businesses Make When Designing Their Website

You’ve got roughly 8 seconds to capture the attention of your visitors or they are off visiting the next site.

So what do your visitors want to see in those few precious seconds?

It’s simple. They want to see:

  1. What do you do?
  2. How will they benefit if they become a customer?
  3. How do they take action?

If your website isn’t generating the leads or sales you think it should, it’s likely that you have a disconnect somewhere. It could be in the design, the copy, or your call-to-action, even your loading speed can affect your results!

In working with hundreds of small businesses we have found there are 10 Most Common Mistakes Businesses Make When Designing Their Website they are:

You talk about your company instead of connecting with your target audience.
Connect with your target audience and give them a reason to choose you instead of your competitor.

If you were to line up your website with your top 2 – 3 competitors would you be able to quickly identify what makes your business unique from theirs?

Or does your site basically say the same thing as theirs?

Customers choose to do business with you because they have a problem, and they believe your product or service can solve it.

Craft a specific message that speaks directly to your customers’ issues. When they see that you understand them and their challenge that captures their attention and get them to spend a little more time on your site.

You don’t clearly state what you do.
Too many people try to come up with a catchy phrase or tagline that’s clever, thinking that will capture the attention of your visitor.

You’ve only got a few seconds to get your point across. Make it clear – make it simple.

Not sure if your message is clear enough? Find a casual acquaintance who doesn’t know your business. Ask them to look at the home page of your website for 5 – 10 seconds. Then, ask them to tell you exactly what you do. If they can, you’re golden! If not, you’ve got work to do on your message to provide clarity.

You don’t show proof that your products or services have worked for others.
Don’t just say you’re the best – prove it.
Don’t just say you’re different – prove it.
Don’t just say you’ve helped a lot of customers – prove it.

Buyers are more skeptical today than ever before. Use the power of “social proof” to prove that your business truly helps your customers.

Showcase customer testimonials. Highlight recognizable brands that have worked with you. Call out statistics that prove your success.

You don’t need to go overboard, a “sprinkle” of social proof goes a long way.

You use the wrong images.
You’ve heard it many times before, “a picture is worth a thousand words”. The question is, what are your pictures on your website saying?

Your visitors want to see themselves having success from using your products or services. Use pictures that show your customers having success as a result of your products or services.

Ideally, you want to use custom images whenever possible over stock images.

You use too much text.
People don’t really read word-for-word online – they scan. This is why your headlines need to grab the attention of your visitor.

Keep your text short and sweet and to the point. Too much text will overwhelm your visitor and cause them to bounce (meaning, leave your page).

Don’t take my word for it…

Take a look at your bounce rate inside of Google Analytics…the proof is in the numbers.

You use sliding images in your headers.
The only people who like sliders on websites are web developers (for some reason) and the business owner. I think they think it looks “cool” and “flashy”.

Here’s the deal…

Visitors want clarity. They aren’t going to wait for your slider images to rotate so that they can read what you have to say on each image. And there’s nothing more frustrating when a slider image catches your eye…then it switches, and you have to wait till it rotates back around!

Sliders provide a terrible user experience.
Sliders are terrible for SEO.
Sliders are just bad!

You have too many pages.
Too many pages are difficult to navigate to find the information your visitor is looking for. Plus, it can send them down a “rabbit hole” of clicking (but not really reading).

Keep your front facing pages (on your main navigation) to a minimum.

Remember, visitors what to know:

  1. What do you do?
  2. How will they benefit from your products or services?
  3. How do they take action?

It shouldn’t take a 30-page website to answer these questions :)

You don’t have a clear call-to-action.
We tend to see businesses “stuffing” every page on their site with a bunch of call-to-actions.

If you want your visitors to take a specific action then the best approach is to have (1) one call-to-action per page. It’s ok to have that same call-to-action multiple times on the page but you want to have one consistent call-to-action.

The content (copy and images) on that page should support all the reasons why your visitor should take that action.

Too many call-to-actions is confusing to your visitors…they don’t know what you want them to do.

You use social media icons.
Think about it…

You spend a ton of time, money, and resources to drive traffic to your website right? And when they finally show up you have social media icons on your site that direct them to LEAVE your site!!!!

This is THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE we see businesses make. There are better ways to build your social media following. Don’t ask visitors to leave your site.

Your site isn’t mobile friendly.
When your website isn’t mobile friendly it is not only frustrating to your visitors but Google will actually penalize you in your rankings.

It is absolutely ESSENTIAL that your site is mobile-friendly!

Stop Wasting Time on Leads that Aren’t Ready to Buy: Use Lead Scoring to Focus on your Hottest Leads

Lead Scoring is used by businesses to rank prospects using a scale that applies value to a lead based off a predetermined set of criteria that makes them a good candidate for conversion. Whether you are a small business with a sales team or a solopreneur that wears all the hats in your business lead scoring is important so that you (or your team) isn’t wasting time with leads that aren’t ready to buy.

The first thing you’ll need to do to set up a lead scoring system for your business is to determine which criteria makes for a qualified lead.

You’ll want to sit down and determine which activities and behaviors make for a qualified lead.

Once you’ve identified the activities and behaviors that are attributed to a qualified lead you will want to develop a point system that you apply for those activities and behaviors. I’d recommend that your point system be based off a 0 – 100 point scale.

What Score Makes a Lead Sales Ready?

With the point system in place you can now create a lead score card. Here’s an example of what a Lead Score Card may look like:

This lead currently has 90 points. So, you may determine that a lead is considered “hot” if they have accumulated 75 points or more (if using a 100 point scale).

Here’s an example of a lead that has reached a 4 “flame” status and would be considered a “hot lead”:

Once a lead has reached a “hot lead” qualification they would be sent over to your sales team (or assigned to you) to contact them for conversion.

To determine what point value would validate a “hot lead” it helps to look at past lead activity to determine what has historically lead to sales conversions.

Keep in mind, a lead’s activity can change from day to day, so it is important that your sales team acts quickly in contacting your qualified lead.

It’s also important to point out that it’s virtually impossible to track a leads activity manually. You’ll need a lead management software that enables you to set your lead scoring criteria so that you can score your leads in real time.

A Beginner’s Guide to Marketing Automation

Have you ever had one of those days where you wish you could clone yourself?

You wish you had 3 more people just like you that could help you with all the tasks you have to complete to keep your business running?

As a small business owner it is essential that we optimize our time when running our business.

What if you could “hire someone” to help you with:

  •  Marketing
  • Sales
  • Daily Routine Tasks

What if you could “hire” that “person” for less than $300 a month!? And they would be willing to work 24 hours a day | 7 days a week….and never take a vacation!

Have I got your attention yet?

Marketing Automation

It’s not very probable that you could hire a real person that would be willing to deliver all that for less than $300 a month, but you can leveraging the power of Marketing Automation to do all those things!

Marketing Automation refers to software that can allows you to automate your sales and marketing activities. The software is designed to help you execute your sales and marketing activities in a streamlined, effective, and efficient way.

What does that mean for you as a small business owner | marketer?

Implementing marketing automation in your business will help you:

  • Capture leads 24 hours a day | 7 days a week
  • Follow up with 100% of the leads that you capture
  • Deliver more value to your customers and prospects
  • Save time and help your team (or yourself) become more efficient
  • Plus, so much more!

If you think about it, the ultimate goal for your marketing activities is to generate revenue. The challenge for most small business owners is that we have limited time, money, and resources to commit to sales and marketing.

Marketing Automation allows you to do more with less effort (once it’s set up of course).

Here’s a few examples of how you can make your Marketing Automation Software work for you.

Managing Leads

As a Small Business Owner, your most valuable asset is your marketing database (or email list). Your database is only as powerful as you make it though.

Most businesses spend a tremendous amount of time trying to capture leads. However, research shows that 50% of leads aren’t ready to buy right away.

So, what do you do with those leads in the meantime?

Marketing Automation provides you the opportunity to follow up and nurture those leads (automatically) until they are ready.

Spend Time With The Hottest Leads

If you’re like many small business owners, you have leads, but you’re having trouble making sure you’re spending your time and resources on the ones most ready to buy. Nothing is more frustrating than wasting energy on cold leads while the hot ones buy from someone else!

Lead scoring is a feature of Marketing Automation and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software that allows you to have a more complete view of how your customers are interacting with you and determine who you should be spending your valuable time on.

Intelligent Behavioral Marketing

Intelligent Behavioral Marketing is a series of automated actions that can trigger to occur based on a person’s behavior or actions.

Imagine how much more effective your messages would be if you were able to track the actions of each lead that gets on your list and then being able to follow up with your leads based on those actions.

I would dare to say that if done effectively it could (and should) help you close more deals!

Do Better Marketing

Bottom line – Marketing Automation allows you to become a better marketer.

With the power of Marketing Automation on your side you are able to build stronger relationships with prospects and customers which will result in better conversions.

#2: How to Create a Lead Generation Machine to Consistently Attract Customers

Listen to the Bootstrap Marketing Podcast – EPISODE #2

I’ve been in sales and marketing for a long time. More importantly, I’ve been a Small Business Owner since the day I graduated from high school! (Let’s not try and guess how long that’s been :)

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the saying, “the money’s in the list”….you’ve heard it too; right?

Yet, many entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners still don’t prioritize building of their prospect list!!! I must admit, I didn’t either..

I have found that there are just a few reasons why entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners don’t focus on their List Building and Lead Generation:

1. They are off chasing the “low hanging fruit”. Basically, they are reactive in their business (as opposed to being proactive). They wait for someone to call them, their clients to refer them, or (hopefully) get a lead or two from their networking.

2. They’re so busy running the day-to-day operations that they find it difficult to be consistent in building their leads list.

3. They don’t have a system to collecting QUALIFIED leads 24 hours a day / 7 days a week….and they don’t know were to start.

Heck, as I said I’ve even fell trap to the very same excuses!

It wasn’t until I launched a new business venture on March 2, 2016, called Pug Shop Design. Pug Shop Design offers unlimited graphic design service to entrepreneur and agencies at one low flat monthly rate.

My goal isn’t to get off point, the reason why I’m sharing this with you is because I have been able to build a five figure business in just over 60 days – starting from scratch! Plus, Pug Shop Design is on pace to become a million dollar business in the next 12 – 15 months…an unbelievable blessing!

I share this with you because, without a list of qualified prospects, I could have never accomplished this!

Here’s a secret that will BLOW YOUR MIND…we’ve created this tremendous success with a list of roughly 400 people! It’s not about the SIZE of your list as much as it is about the QUALITY of your list. Don’t get me wrong, you want a large list…but most importantly you want a list that wants to hear from you and is engaged.

So, I’ve put together this podcast on, “Why Create a Lead Generation Machine for Your Business”. As you listen you are going to discover:

  • Why List Building is Essential to today’s business owner…
  • What is List Building exactly…
  • The 4 main benefits to building your list…
  • Ideas for both Online and Offline strategies to capture leads (and the pros and cons of both)

During the podcast, I mentioned a totally Free Online Training Workshop that I am hosting to walk you through my proven 6 Step Action Plan to Growing Your Email List. CLICK HERE to register for this very valuable free training.

The Perfect Project Management Tool for Productivity Hackers…Kanbanchi

Finding the perfect project management tool is equivalent to finding a needle in a haystack.

I have tried virtually every task management, project management, and collaboration tool out there…ok, so that’s not entirely true (considering there are thousands). But, I have used: Basecamp, Trello, Teamwork, Asana, Clarizen, 17 Hats, Dapulse, ProWorkflow, Process Street, and the list goes on and on…

And then, I found Kanbanchi. The ultimate task management, project management, and collaboration tool available for small teams.

Here’s some of the reason why I fell in love with Kanbanchi so quickly:

1. It’s SUPER SIMPLE to start using! Once you sign up, you are given a quick tutorial on how to begin using Kanbanchi right away…and then, you are off and running within 2 minutes.

2. The layout is visually appealing. This is really important to a person like me (with a design background). I can lay out my “cards” similar to Trello. I can also color code, tag, and upload images to my cards. The drag and drop feature allows me to move the cards from one list to the next easily. If you upgrade to the Pro Version you can also convert your dashboard to the Gantt Chart view as well.

Gantt Chart

3. Once I create a card I can invite my team, clients, or colleagues to collaborate. As we work on the task Kanbanchi records and documents the conversation and activity around the task.

4. I can create unlimited dashboards to manage different aspects of my personal and business life. I am a “list person”. I am so much of a list person that I’m the type that writes down a task I’ve already completed just so that I can mark it off the list (an illness I know :)! So, I create a dashboard for every list. I have a dashboard for every client. I have a dashboard for each business I own. I have a dashboard for conversations I have with my business coach. I have a dashboard for an upcoming party I am preparing for. I have a dashboard for my daily “personal to-do’s” (of course, I have my “honey do’s” on their too :). Dashboards allow me to stay focused on the project I am working on at that moment so that I don’t have to rummage through a gigantic list of things that need to be done. Instead, I can focus on the project that I’ve blocked time for at that moment. This is SUPER important! Simple (but effective) productivity hack here!

There are sooooooo many features within Kanbanchi that I love I would literally bore you with the details! But HERE’S THE MOST IMPORTANT FEATURE that makes Kanbanchi THE ULTIMATE PRODUCTIVITY HACK….

5. It fully integrates with Google Calendar and Google Drive! That means when I set due dates and reminders it automatically adds it to my Google Calendar. When I need to attach images, forms, or documents I can do so in just 2 clicks! And all of this is done in REAL TIME!

So, there you have it…a quick overview of my love for Kanbanchi :) I hope that you’ll take advantage of their FREE version and explore for yourself how easy Kanbanchi is to use and look for opportunities how you can leverage Kanbanchi as a productivity hack for your business.
